the National Academy of Veterinary Science Seminar

Dr Kirti Dua Prof cum Head Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine ethics and Jurisprudence College of Veterinary Science, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana was invited to give lecture on "One world, one health: role of veterinarian in building interdisciplinary bridges to health and globalized world" at the Seminar organized by National Academy of Veterinary Sciences held at Rajasthan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Bikaner on 11-12 Nov, 2011. The topic of the seminar was "Veterinary Profession, challenges and opportunities under WTO regime". In his lecture Dr Dua mentioned that humans, animals and their pathogens have coexisted for millennia, but recent economic, institutional and environmental trends are creating new disease risks and intensifying old ones. The most important factor is the dramatic increase in the world's population which is putting lot of pressure on land use, encroachment on natural forests and their rich and diverse fauna, thereby exposing humans and domestic animals to new pathogens. About 60% of known human infectious diseases have their source in animals (whether domestic or wild), as do 75% of emerging human diseases and 80% of the pathogens that could potentially be used in bioterrorism.

The new concept "One World, One Health" suggest that the link between animal diseases and public health to forge co-equal, all inclusive collaborations between physicians, veterinarians, and other scientific-health related disciplines. Veterinarians play a significant role in building interdisciplinary bridges for human and animal health as they have a considerable training in comparative medicine, zoonoses, and public health. They are also in an ideal position for establishing a disease surveillance system using pets as sentinels of disease exposure. The future will most likely bring more collaborations of veterinarians from all fields with multiple professions such as public health, human medicine, bio-engineering, animal science, environmental science, and wildlife.
