Tewari exposes Sukhbir’s false claims about Ludhiana airport

LUDHIANA, November 29: The Ludhiana MP and the spokesperson of the Indian National Congress Manish Tewari today sought to expose false claims of the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal about Ludhiana Airport. He said, the state government was deliberately delaying the installation of the DVOR equipment by not cooperating with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

In a statement issued here today, Tewari said, while Mr Badal was trying to take false credit for getting the flights resumed from Ludhiana airport, the reality was that his government was sitting over the plans to expand it and improve facilities of visibility there.

Substantiating his charges of callous indifference of his government towards facilitating the improvement of services, Tewari quoted a letter from the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to the state government for the transfer of 150 kanal land to Airport Authority of India for upgradation of Aerodrome Ludhiana, besides removal of various obstructions and provision for approach road.

Tewari said, despite the union ministry's request that the matter may be taken on priority given the approaching of the foggy season, the state government did nothing. The Union Civil Aviation ministry had worked expeditiously for getting installed the DVOR equipment, required for improved visibility. But the state government has not done its part so far.

Although the union ministry sent the letter about a month ago requesting the state government, "with a view to operationalise DVOR before the onset of the next fog season your early response is requested" it (the state government) is yet to respond not to speak of initiating any action.

The Ludhiana MP pointed out, when Kingfisher flight was launched in Ludhiana, the Deputy Chief Minister made state government to pay for the advertisements. "Now let Mr Badal talk to Mr Vijay Mallaya (the owner of the Kingfisher airlines) to ensure regular flights of the Kingfisher and I am sure he will return the favour", Tewari remarked, while ridiculing the publicity stunts of Mr Sukhbir Badal.

Tewari said, Mr Badal should practice what he claims. "If he is really serious about success of the Ludhiana airport he should ask his government to contribute its little bit so that the DVOR equipment is installed at the earliest at the airport so that the frequency of cancellation of flights does not increase", the MP said, while hoping Mr Badal might feel morally obliged that he should be practically doing what he is claiming to be doing.
