PAU SCIENTISTS BAG HONOURS

Dr D.S. Cheema, Head, Department of Vegetable Crops, has been awarded Dr Kirti Singh Gold Medal for 2010 by the Horticulture Society of India for his contribution in vegetable science. The award was presented to him by Dr M.S. Swaminathan, the renowned agricultural scientist, at the 4th Indian Horticulture Congress 2010 held at New Delhi.



Dr Cheema has made significant contribution towards the development of high yielding varieties/F1 hybrids of different vegetables and technologies for off-season production of vegetables. He has earlier been recipient of Shri Hans Raj Pahwa Award, Shrimati Harpal Kaur Memorial Award and Dr Gurdev Singh Khush Distinguished Professor Award. The Punjab Government conferred the Parman Patra on Dr Cheema in August 2010 for outstanding contribution in vegetable science.





Meanwhile, Dr.J.K. Sangha, Professor and Head, Department of Food and Nutrition and Coordinator of Research, College of Home Science, bagged Best Poster Presentation Award at 42nd National Conference of Nutrition Society of India, held in Mumbai on November 19 -20, 2010 on the theme 'Wholesome Nutrition: Challenges, Scope and Management." She was awarded for her paper on "Efficacy of nutrition counseling on the nutritional status of adolescent anaemic girls." A remarkable improvement was observed in the haemotological profile of the subjects when the iron was supplemented with natural sources i.e. amla powder and lemon as compared to synthetic vitamin C. The work was carried out by Sukhdeep Kaur under the guidance of Dr Sangha. One of the M.Sc student Monika Choudhary presented her work for the Young Scientist Award session.
