SCIENTIST FROM AMERICA DELIBERATES ON THE GAINS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY IN AGRICULTURE

Dr. Kulwinder S. Gill, Professor & Vogel Endowed Chair in Wheat Breeding & Genetics, Washington State University (WSU), Pullman, USA is currently on a visit to PAU. He delivered a lecture in PAU School of Agricultural Biotechnology on molecular wheat breeding and virus induced gene silencing. Dr. Gill said that PAU has state of the art facilities in biotechnology and with this it has joined the list of renowned centers in this area. \'The ultimate gain is the use of genomic information in the fields\', said Dr. Gill while replying to queries by participants about various aspects of biotechnological research in agriculture. The researchers, students and faculty members participated as audience. Presiding over, Dr. Manjit Singh Kang, Vice-Chancellor, PAU said that PAU alumni have found placements all over the world and they are playing a bridge between PAU and their place of working. Dr. Kang appreciated Prof. Gill in providing career counseling to PAU students. The Director of Research, Dr. S.S.Gosal while welcoming Dr. Gill said that his visit to PAU is always rewarding to students. He said that during his stay at PAU, Dr. Gill will deliver lectures on various topics to the students in the areas of wheat genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics & Biotechology. Besides, he will be giving some practical demonstrations regarding bio-informatic tools for their proper use in gene cloning and gene sequencing. He will also be available for the career counseling to the students. Dr Kulwinder Gill is an alumnus of PAU who did his M.Sc. in the discipline of Plant Breeding. Dr. Gosal said that Dr. Gill has his research interest in the wheat genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics & biotechnology. Dr. Gill is recipient of several prestigious awards such as Gold Medal (1983) PAU, Sigma Outstanding Scientist Award, Junior Faculty for Excellence in Research Award, Univ. of Nebraska. He has delivered several scientific lectures on various conferences/seminars held in India, USA, Canada, France, Italy, Singapore, The Netherlands. Dr. H.S.Sandhu and the adjunct Professor Dr. G.S.Miglani also spoke on the occasion and thanked the speaker, Dr. Kang and all participants.
