Rakhi ka Insaaf, Bigg Boss face National Commission for Women’s ire

National Commission for Women (NCW) had helped Rakhi Sawant after singer Mika allegedly tried to get fresh with her in 2006, but today the bold actor is facing the ire of NCW for displaying "blatant vulgarity" and using "foul language" on prime-time television.

Upset at the "indecent language" used on Rakhi ka Insaaf, NCW chairperson Girija Vyas has written to NDTV Imagine, the channel that airs the show, seeking explanation. NCW is also upset at the "indecent" clothes worn by women actors on Bigg Boss-Season IV being aired on Colors.

Vyas said she supported the decision to shift the telecast of Bigg Boss and Rakhi ka Insaaf to the 11 pm to 5 am slot and urged the government to speed up the process of bringing the amended Prohibition of Indecent Representation of Women and Children Bill, 2008, in parliament to ensure monitoring of content on the electronic media.

"Besides law, there should be self-regulation. Every media group, production house and advertisement agency should create and maintain a self-regulatory mechanism. For example, dresses worn by women on Bigg Boss are not decent. Unless a law is enacted, shows such as Bigg Boss and Rakhi ka Insaaf cannot be stopped," she said.

Vyas said the proposed law aimed at broadening the definition of indecent representation, expanding the scope of the Act to include electronic and digital media and making punishments stringent.

The proposed bill would include electronic media, internet and even SMS and MMS clips. "A new clause, 'publish', will be introduced to cover audio-visual media, satellite and internet communication," Vyas said.
