Bar on practice by IMA chief, secretary

New Delhi : The board of governors of the Medical Council of India (MCI) has removed the names of the president and the secretary of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) from the medical register for six months for endorsing food products.

IMA chief G. Samaram and secretary Dharam Prakash cannot practice medicine for six months or until their names are once again added to the register.

Censure letters have also been issued to all IMA executive members, warning them against repeating these practices. This information was given by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in response to a question in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

This is, perhaps, the first time that such strict action has been taken against doctors for violating the code of ethics.

The Ministry had received a complaint relating to endorsement in 2009 of some food products by the Association. The complaint was forwarded to the Council.

The MCI ethics committee, at its November 9, 2010 meeting, decided to remove the two names temporarily.

Earlier this year, the MCI had warned the IMA against endorsing food and hygiene products of private companies, as these violated the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulation, 2002 provisions. The MCI had sent show cause notice to all doctors and associations prima facie found to be involved in endorsements.
