REFRESHER COURSE ON PLANT BREEDING METHODOLOGY CONCLUDED AT PAU

LUDHIANA, NOVEMBER 29:-----



The Centre of Advanced Faculty Training in Genetics and Plant Breeding, PAU has organized a three-week advanced training programme on \'Recent Advances in Plant Breeding Methodology\' in the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics which was concluded today. This was the 26th training course in a row organized by the centre. Dr. Gursharan Singh Sambhi, Dean Postgraduate Studies was the Chief Guest at the concluding function and on this occasion he advised the participants to utilize the knowledge gained in this course in their own research. He emphasized the participants to develop projects in collaboration with the faculty of this department. Dr. M.S.Gill, Head, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics-cum-Director of the Centre discussed the topics delivered in this course. The course was being attended by 16 Assistant Professor and Associate Professor level scientists from 5 states of India (Gujarat, Karnataka, UP, Rajasthan and Punjab). All the participants showed keen interest in the latest techniques of Plant Breeding in combating the yield barrier, biotic and abiotic stresses in crop plants. They were given in depth knowledge regarding basic cell biology, fertility regulation, male sterility and incapability, methods of Plant Breeding, experimental designs including GGE biplot, micropropogation, markers and marker assisted selection, development of special type of crops, Plant Breeder\'s Rights and Plant Variety Protection and Farmer\'s Right Act etc. This was an unique opportunity for the scientists from different parts of the country to refresh their knowledge and interact with the faculty of this institute, said Dr. Gill.
