Unemployed linemen hunger strike on Nov 25

LUDHIANA: The members of Unemployed Linemen Union would sit in indefinite hunger strike in front of Powercom office along with their family members from November 25.

They decided this during a district-level meeting on Saturday to discuss next course of action, as their ultimatum to the state government to appoint lineman in Powercom would end on November 25.

Union district president Jagjit Singh said they would stage a massive protest in front of Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) headoffice in Patiala on November 25 if the government failed to accede to their demand pending for the past 14 years.

The government should recruit meter readers and linemen in one week or be prepared to face the consequences, he added.

The activists said chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had issued orders on October 27 to PSPCL to immediately recruit 5,000 linemen on contract basis on a salary of Rs 10,000 per month.

Badal had then directed Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd chairman-cum-managing director KD Chaudhary to complete the required formalities for seeking approval during the meeting of Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd Board of Directors for the recruitment process in the next 10 days. But Chaudhary extended the date till November 25, the union members alleged.

Meanwhile, the union members are staging demonstration in front of Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd office from November 11.
