Tewari flays Punjab govt for backing out on Ludhiana airport commitment

LUDHIANA, May 29:

Ludhiana MP and the National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress Manish Tewari today criticised the Punjab government for backing out of its commitment to lay underground the high tension electric wires passing through the Ludhiana Airport.

Tewari disclosed that against its commitment, the state government instead asked the Airport Authority of India to deposit about Rs 62 lakh with the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited for laying these wires underground. He said, the PSPCL had written a letter to the AAI for depositing this money for laying the wires underground.

He said, this was breach of commitment on part of the Punjab government which had promised to facilitate the process. He said, it is important that these wires must be laid underground so that DVOR facility could be installed at the airport to facilitate round the clock landing there. This will also help the flights to operate during poor visibility, he pointed out.

Tewari said, Punjab government's demand for money from the AAI for a simple thing like laying the wires underground speaks volumes of its double speak and hypocrisy. "Otherwise the government by now should already have laid down the wires underground if it was really serious about making the airport successful", he observed.

Prominent among those present on the visit included Electrical Airport Authority of India, DGM Mr. T.K. Kakkar, Sahnewal Airport Inchage Mr. V.P. Jain, DCC President Pawan Dewan, Raman Subramanium and others.
