UNDERTAKE PADDY TRANSPLANTING AFTER JUNE 10-PAU EXPERTS

LUDHIANA, MAY 27:-----

The farm experts of Punjab Agricultural University has said that the paddy should not be transplanted before June 10 as it was not in the interest of water resource besides being prohibited legally. The experts said that the recommended varieties PR-120, PR-118, PR-116, PR-114, PR-111, PR-113 varieties should be transplanted from June 10 and the varieties PR-115 from June 20 onwards. The variety PR-115 vacates the field early where potato, peas and barseem crops can be timely grown.

The experts advised that paddy seedlings in the nursery sown in light texture soils generally become yellow or whitish due to iron deficiency. To such nursery spray 0.5 to 1 kg ferrous sulphate dissolved in 100 liters of water. Apply two three sprays at four day intervals. The experts revealed that at the time of transplanting, 37 kg urea per acre on medium soils should be applied. Phosphorous application may be omitted where paddy is followed by wheat receiving the recommended dose of phosphorous. In soils testing low in phosphorous, 75 kg single super phosphate may be applied per acre. The experts shared that zinc deficiency is generally noticed in paddy, 25 kg zinc sulphate per acre at the time of puddling should be applied after every three years. Dhaincha for green manuring may be burried at the time of puddling.

For control of weeds, use 45 g topstar 80 WP or 60 g Pyrazosulfuron 10 WP or 1200 ml of any recommended formulation of Butachlor 50 EC or Thiogencarb 50 EC or 500 ml or Anilofos 30 EC or Pretilachlor 50 EC at 600 ml or Pretilachlor 40 EW 750 ml or Stomp 30 EC @ 1000-1200 ml per acre by mixing with 60 kg of sand. The experts suggested that any of the hebicides be broadcast in standing water uniformly within two three days of transplanting. They advised to avoid early planting of rice to keep under check the incidence of bacterial leaf blight. Stress should be laid on the proper use of fertilizer as excess use of N may lead to bacterial leaf blight and false smut diseases. To check foot rot of basmati rice, the seed should be treated with Bavistin @ 0.2 % (20 g fungicide in 10 liters of water) plus Streptocycline @ 0.01 % (1 g in 10 liters of water) for 12 hours followed by seedling dip in Bavistin 0.2 % for six hours.
