The Senior Extension Specialist (agronomy), Dr. Sarjit Singh has suggested that the sugarcane crop requires to be irrigated at an interval of 7-10 days. The second installment of 65 kg urea may be applied along rows per acre. If the attack of top borer is more than 5%, the application of 12 kg carbofuran 3 G or Phorate 10 G at the base of the shoots may be applied in the end June and slight earthing up to check the granules from flowing with the irrigation water may be undertaken. The irrigation should be given immediately.

According to the Senior Extension Specialist (entomology), Dr. Jagdev Singh Kolar, black bug sometimes becomes serious especially on ratoon crop, in the month of June. To check the pest spray 350 ml of Dursban/Lethal/Massban 20 EC in 400 litres of water per acre. The spray solution should be directed in to the leaf whorl, he said. If dry weather prevails, mite may also cause damage to the crop. Baru is the alternative host plant from which mite spreads to sugarcane crop, he observed adding that the weed should be removed from around the sugarcane fields.
