CIA chief in India, met top officials

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) chief Leon Panetta met top officials of India's security establishment over the past few days. Panetta, who was in India, is believed to have had a series of meetings with officials in the North Block, including one with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram.

The CIA chief, as per sources, discussed the general security environment in the region and also the Indo-US cooperation in security-related issues.

In his meetings with Intelligence Bureau chief Rajiv Mathur and R&AW chief K C Verma, Panetta is learnt to have emphasised intelligence-sharing and counter-terrorism initiatives. The Af-Pak policy of the US is also learnt to have figured in the talks between the CIA chief and the Indian authorities. Cross-border terrorism was also discussed, sources said.

Sources added that discussions also touched the subject of Pakistani-American terror accused David Coleman Headley. A team from India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) had quizzed Headley in June this year.

Indian officials are learnt to have also underlined how Pakistan had not yet delivered on bringing the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks to book.
