Mobile Number Portability, finally, arrives

After a number of delays, the ever-elusive Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is finally here. The phased launch of the MNP implementation is set to kick start on Nov 1 in Haryana.

Union minister for communications A Raja on Tuesday, Oct 27 announced the launch of the much-awaited MNP in the national capital on the sidelines of BSNL awards ceremony.

"MNP would be partially operational from Nov 1. We wanted to inaugurate it in Haryana," said Raja.

This will be followed by a first phase rollout in 11 circles in north and west India from third week of Nov 2010, the minister informed.

Therefore, a pan- India rollout can be expected by the year-end.

Once the MNP is implemented, mobile users can shift to any mobile operator of their choice without changing their mobile numbers by paying a nominal transaction fee.
