NEW DELHI: Facing a leadership crisis in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the country's mainstay for dealing with internal security threats, the Home Ministry has brought in famed Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer K Vijay Kumar to replace Vikram Srivastava.
Known for his daring outmanoeuvres as chief of Tamil Nadu's Special Task Force that eliminated dreaded sandalwood smuggler Veerappan on October 18, 2004, Vijay Kumar has been brought in to step up the confidence in CRPF that has taken a consistent beating since the Maoist massacre of 75 of its men in Dantewada on April 6.
By bringing in Vijay Kumar, the government may have ruffled feathers within the organisation, as two senior IPS officers Vijay Raman (1975-batch) and N K Tripathi (1974-batch) are presently posted as Special Directors General in the CRPF. Srivastava has been given charge of the Bureau of Police Research and Development, Delhi.
However, the Home Ministry went ahead with the decision as Vijay Kumar, currently posted as director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, had completed a successful stint in Kashmir as Inspector General of BSF for two years, besides being expert in jungle warfare, qualities that few IPS officers can lay claim to.
The Centre relies heavily on the CRPF to bring in a semblance of law and order in both Kashmir and vast swathes of Naxal-dominated regions
