Pig farmers meet at GADVASU

The monthly meeting of Progressive Pig Farmers Association (PPFA) was held in the department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University on 28.10.2010. Pig farmers from different parts of Punjab participated in this meeting. The problems of pig farmers were discussed in detail. On the demand of Pig farmers, a special lecture topic "Balance and Economical feeding of Pig was delivered by Dr. Parminder Singh, Associate Professor, of the Department. He informed the farmers about various feed ingredients, composition of ration according to age of pig and about importance of balance feeding and stressed that farmers should made feed at home so that quality of various feed ingredients can be ensured. Dr. Harkirat Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Veterinary Parasitology apprised the farmers about "Control of internal parasites in pig". He discussed in detail about the ill effects of worm infestation in pig and about the measures for controlling worms. Dr. H K Verma, Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education , informed that the monthly meeting for pig farmers is organized at GADVASU by PPFA on every 4th Thursday of month. PPFA has around 250 members. The project on pig farming prepared by GADVASU scientists and approved by Punjab Govt was also discussed. He also informed that thinking of farmers are changing about pig farming and now many new pig farms are coming up with large numbers of pigs. Pig farming is gaining popularity in the state and pig farmers should follow the scientific guidelines of Veterinary University for achieving maximum profit. Dr. Rajesh Kasrija, District Extension Specialist of Vety. & Animal Husbandry Extension Education, made suitable arrangement for smooth conduct of this meeting.
