DEPARTMENTAL REVIEWS AT PAU TO REPRIORITIZE RESEARCH

LUDHIANA,

Punjab Agricultural University is known for its research programmes to address the issues concerning Punjab agriculture. The Directorate of Research steers the research programmes of the University through research schemes. The research being a major component of PAU activity has an allocation of 63.41% of the total University budget. The Director of Research, Dr. S.S.Gosal said that to make the research programmes need based, to avoid any duplicity and for the rational use of fiscal and scientific resources, an exercise to reprioritize research and technology generation progrmames has been started.

For this, the on going research programmes in different departments of the constituent colleges and research stations of the PAU are being reviewed. A calendar for the in-house research review has been formulated. During the review the departmental Head shares the salient research achievements made during the period April, 2008 to December, 2010. The scientists from related departments participate in the interaction and provide inputs for the need-based reprioritization, said Dr. Gosal adding that so far the departments of College of Agriculture, School of Agricultural Biotechnology, Directorate of Seeds, etc. have been covered under the in-house review exercise. Dr. Gosal said that earlier, the University held an interface between farmers, industrialists and other stakeholders with PAU researchers to arrive at programmes that could serve their best interest in relation to Punjab agriculture. He said that PAU gives due consideration to feedback received from farmers and other sources in re-orienting its research programmes. The in-house review of the departments is, therefore, greatly relevant in the formulation of research and technology generation programmes.
