RICH BIO-DIVERSITY IS HELPFUL FOR CROP IMPROVEMENT

LUDHIANA,

Through transgenic approach, scientists can improve the genetic gains in crop improvement to break the yield barriers. This was stated by Dr. Gurmukh S. Johal, Professor from Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Purdue University, while delivering a talk on \'Exploring and manipulating bio-diversity in crops\'. He said that progress in plant breeding has given us high yielding crops but at the same time has eroded the natural bio-diversity. \'We really need a creative method to harness the natural resources and bio-diversity\', he remarked.

Presiding over the event, Dr. Manjit Singh Kang, Vice-Chancellor, PAU welcomed Dr. Johal for visiting PAU and appreciated the way he interacted with students and faculty members. He said that Dr. Johal has delivered a series of lecture for students in bio-technology, plant breeding and genetics. The present lecture was arranged by PAU Science Club. The Dean, Postgraduate Studies, Dr. Gursharan Singh proposed his vote of thanks.
