PAU TIPS FOR HOME MANAGEMENT AND HEALTH CARE IN RAINY SEASON

LUDHIANA, JULY 21:-----

In view of rainy season, the home scientists of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have called upon the home makers to pay attention to the home management and diet and health care of children as well as family members. In rainy season, many diseases occur due to the growth of harmful bacteria and insects, which badly affect food, clothes and household articles, they said, while emphasizing that it is vital to keep the home spick and span and take precautionary measures regarding various infections and diseases arising during this particular season.

Referring to home cleaning, Dr Surinderjit Kaur advised the home makers that not to allow water stagnate inside or outside the house as it will lead to breeding of mosquitoes, which may cause dengue or malaria. Regularly pour liberal amount of hot water with kerosene oil in all drains and drain pipes of sinks in order to prevent breeding of cockroaches, she added. "To prevent knives and other iron tools from rusting, rub these with coconut oil, mustard oil or glycerin once a fortnight. Lubricate door hinges and locks to avoid rusting and squeaking noise," she suggested.

Stressing on diet and health care, Dr Kirti Grover advised the public to drink boiled or giltered water without ice. Avoid fried and non-vegetarian food, raw fruits and vegetables that cannot be peeled and dairy products like cheese, raita, etc. at roadside dhabas or at the large gatherings, she said. Consume bitter vegetables like bitter gourd (karela) and herbs such as tulsi, neem, methi, turmeric (haldi) and ginger as they prevent infections, she told, while asking to drink buttermilk as it improves the digestion. Emphasizing on eating moderate quantity of food, Dr Grover suggested the public to prefer warm beverages like tea with ginger.

Providing tips for the care of children, Dr Sukhminder Kaur impressed upon the parents that not to allow children to play in stagnant water as they may get several skin diseases. Make them wear skid proof soles of shoes so that they may not slip or fall and full sleeves night suits in order to protect them from mosquitoes and other insect bites. She urged the parents that not to allow the children to eat from the street vendors as it can cause indigestion and the child may suffer from diarrhea and other diseases.

Discussing about the care and maintenance of clothes, Dr Harinder Saggu suggested wearing cotton/blended fabrics like terycot/teryvoile, etc. which give a cool feel to the body. Use plastic/rubber shoes during these days, she said, while stressing to always wipe clothes line before putting clothes on it for drying, otherwise rust stains will spread. She added, "Leather and suede shoes should be stored in a closet that is cool and ventilated. Reduce dampness in closets by tying pieces of chalk, spreading old newspapers using camphor cakes to protect expensive clothes
