Two training programmes started at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University

Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized the knowledge Upgradation Programme for Dairy Farmers. Dr R S Sahota, Director Extension Education, GADVASU while inaugurating the training said that GADVASU is going to organize series of such training programmes for farmers and field functionaries of the state as well as country. This training programme on knowledge up gradation of dairy trainees is sponsored by Indian Immunologicals Limited, Hyderabad. On this occasion Mr CH. Srinivasa Sastry ,Customer Relations Manager, Indian Immunologicals revealed that the company is trying its best to upgrade the scientific knowledge of the dairy farmers of the country and for that, the company has shortlisted the farmers and other technical officers from the country and they are being trained at GADVASU, Ludhiana. Dr J S Hundal course coordinator told that thirty eight farmers from four states-Rajsthan, Andhra Pardesh, Haryana and Punjab are, participating in this training programme

Another 15 days course for the farmers of Punjab and neighboring states on specialized dairy farming has been started in the same department of GADVASU, with the theme "Adopt dairy farming for the progress of Punjab". Dr. R. S. Sahota, in his inaugural lecture interacted with the farmers and dealt with their queries. He also explained in detail about the current and future scenario of dairy industry. He stressed upon the value addition of dairy products, record keeping of dairy farming and especially on the issue of raising of calves born on farmer's own dairy farm for the breed improvement. Dr. H.K. Verma, Head, Department of Animal Husbandry Extension Education told that the farmers will be guided to make the green fodder available to their animals throughout the year. They will also be encouraged to make the concentrate feed at the farm itself. This will be ensured quality of the feed and it will be economical too. The farmers will be trained to differentiate between healthy and sick animals. Role of regular vaccination, deworming and hygiene in prevention of diseases will be stressed. The first aid methods for various ailments will be taught and practical demonstrations will be held. Tips for timely detection of heat, timely Artificial Insemination and care of pregnant and new born animals will be emphasized. The experts from Bank and Insurance Company will also deliver their lectures regarding facilities provided by them. He said that although livestock population has declined over the years, but still there is increase in milk production, which is indicative of high and better producing animals being reared in the state. Course coordinator Dr Udeybir Singh informed that 51 farmers from different districts of Punjab are participating in the programme.
