UCPMA CONDEMNS ANOTHER POWER TARIFF HIKE EFFECTIVE FROM APRIL 2012 BUT ANNOUNCED ON 16/07/2012

Dated 16/07/2012

The latest decision of the Punjab state electricity regulatory commission and Punjab state power corporation to again hike the power tariff from 55 to 58 paise per unit for industrial consumers and 53 to 58 pasie per unit for domestic consumers with effect from 01/04/2012, but announced 16/07/2012 is vehemently been opposed by President S. Gurmeet Singh Kular and Chairman S. Manjit Singh Khalsa, (UCPMA) & all the Office Bearers of United Cycle & Parts Manufacturers Association. As such, the monthly minimum charges will increase by 20%. It is highly condemnable that power tariff for the last 3.5 months consumption i.e. For the period 01/04/2012 to 15/07/2012 is payable as per hike announced on 16/07/2012. This will greatly affect the already reeling MSME's in this adverse economic scenario.

It is evident that increase in power tariff was intentionally withheld by the Punjab state electricity regulatory commission in collusion with Punjab government due to dusky by poll, the result of which was declared on 14/07/2012. They further stated that the chamber had brought to the notice of P.S.P.C.L. that instead of hiking the power tariff, emphasis should be laid on reducing the transit loss of coal, t & d losses and also curb the menace of theft of energy. Power theft should be made punishable offence.

On the one hand P.S.P.C.L has not been able to give uninterrupted power supply to the industry for the last 4-5 years and on the other hand the Punjab govt. Firstly increased the electricity duty from 10% to 13%, then imposed entry tax of 12.5% on diesel generating sets, further imposed 5% electricity duty from captive consumption from any source and the power tariff is being hiked almost every year by P.S.P.C.L. With all these taxes and duties in place, it is beyond imagination how the industry in Punjab will survive and compete in the national & international market. All the policies framed by the P.S.P.C.L are anti industry and the industrialists of Punjab are being supplied power at exorbitant rate as compared with all other northern states. One cannot hope that any new industry will come up in the state due to repeated hike in power tariff and the imposition of various taxes and duties every now & then.

Sh. Gurmeet Singh Kular President (UCPMA) have requested and urged upon the Honb'le chairman, Punjab state electricity regulatory commission and chairman, Punjab state power corporation limited to review the hike in power tariff effective from 01/04/2012 and if need be the revised rates should be applicable from 01/08/2012, so as to save the Punjab industry from disaster and compulsion of shifting to other states having pro-industry policies.

Thanking you with regards,
