PROGRESSIVE FARMER GURCHARAN S. MANN SELECTED FOR RANGA FARMER AWARD

LUDHIANA, JULY 14:



The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has selected the progressive farmer, Gurcharan Singh Mann of village Tungwali, district Bathinda for "NG Ranga Farmer Award 2011" in recognition of his excellence in the diversified agriculture. He will be presented the award on July 16 at National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NASC) Complex, New Delhi, informed Dr Ravindra Kumar, Assistant Director General, ICAR. Mann has attributed his success to the PAU experts for equipping him with the timely technical guidance about latest farm practices, which have helped him in diversifying his entire agriculture pattern. He has maintained regular contact with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Bathinda, since 1995.



The PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, has congratulated S. Mann for his selection for the prestigious award. He said that such farmers are the future of Punjab agriculture and act as role models for other growers in terms of agri-diversification and conservation of natural resources.





The Director of Extension Education, Dr. M.S.Gill said that the farmer has popularised beekeeping in his village to such an extent that boxes of honey are distributed as gifts on the occasion of marriages. He has the credit of being first in the introduction of the net-house cultivation of vegetables in his area. He obtained trainings, on various aspects of agriculture, from PAU and is a regular reader of the university farm publications.



A recipient of Chief Minister Award and Parwasi Bharti Award, conferred by PAU, Mann carries out his venture, successfully, in scientific farming on 42 acres of land. He cultivates cotton on 10 acres, vegetables on 2.5 acres, fruits on 10 acres, fodder on 2 acres, paddy on 3 acres, flowers on 1 acre, and forest trees on 2.5 acres in addition to fish farming on 12 acres of land. Besides diversifying agriculture, Mann has formed a group of rural youths who have launched a crusade against drug addiction. They are holding camps and persuading the youth to shun the consumption of drugs.



The Deputy Director (Training) of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Bathinda, Jagdish Grover informed that the PAU recommended and forwarded the curriculum vitae of S. Mann for this award.
