Summer school on health foods concludes at CIPHET

Ludhiana, July 21:



A valedictory function was organized at the Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) to mark conclusion of 21-day summer school on 'Newer Concepts & Techniques in Development of Health Foods' organized by the Food Grains & Oilseeds Processing Division at the Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) here today. Total of 25 participants from across country took part in the training programme.



Speaking on the occasion, Director CIPHET Dr U.S Shivhare said that foods habits of the people are changing very fast with the change of lifestyle. "All kinds of health foods including dietary supplements, performance foods, medicinal foods etc are now being provided by the industry," he said, adding that wide range of technology is used for development of these foods. "The objective of this summer school was to bring multidisciplinary researchers on one platform. This helps in sharing of ideas between experts and participants."



Hoping that knowledge gained by participants from summer school will help in their future research endeavors, Dr Shivhare informed that the CIPHET is in process getting mega projects on health foods and secondary agriculture. Dr P.S Lubana, Dean, Punjab Agricultural University, said that need of the hour was to provide safe and standardized food to our growing population. "When we are outside home, the first concern is of safety and quality of the food," he said, adding that this could be assured with latest technology and following the food safety standards. He appreciated the research initiatives carried out at CIPHET under leadership of Director Dr U.S Shivhare.



Head of Food Grains & Oil Seeds Processing (FG&OP) Division Dr R.K Gupta informed that the summer school included 30 lecturers, field visits and hands-on-training of participants. "We have called best experts from across the country for delivering lectures," he added. Senior scientists Dr Manish Mangal and Dr Sangita Bansal coordinated the valedictory function. Project Coordinator (PHT) Dr S.K Nanda and Atmosphere Structures and Environmental Control Division, Head, Dr S.N Jha were prominent present on the occasion.
