Modi, Chidambaram trade charges

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday criticised the UPA government for failing to take adverse note of Germany and Austria's refusal to grant licences to arms manufacturers for exporting arms to states such as Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Orissa.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Chief Ministers' meeting on internal security here, he said the central government should have blacklisted Germany and Austria as the two countries had refused to supply weapons to Orissa and Punjab for fear of misuse.

He said, instead of doing this, the Union Home Ministry asked the state governments to explore other options.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram denied Modi's claim, saying the Centre had written a "helpful letter" to the state governments because Germany and Austria had refused to give export licences to arms manufacturers
