Himachal govt takes title of Karmapa monastery land

Dharamsala, February 15, 2011

The Himachal Pradesh government on Tuesday took over the title of land where 17th Karmapa Ogyene Trinley Dorje\'s Gyuto monastery in Dharamsala is located.

The monastery has been the Tibetan spiritual leader\'s temporary residence since 2002. A few years back, the 50 kanal plot housing the monastery, was declared benami property.

Last week, the Dharamsala tehsildar had informed the Gyuto monastery officials about the impending transfer of title. Media reports quoted Kangra deputy commissioner as saying the action was only a summary revenue proceeding and there would be no immediate physical take over of the property.

The Karmapa-backed Karmae Garchan Trust has no title over the monastery, which was built by Dalai Lama\'s central administration between 2000 and 2002.

The Himachal Pradesh Tenancy and Land Reforms Act prohibits purchase of land by any non-agriculturists who are not bonafide Himachalis.
