February 9th, 2011 KOHIMA:

On Tuesday night, a major fire engulfed most of the official residential quarters of the Chief Minister of Nagaland Mr. Neiphiu Rio. The most probable cause of the fire as sited by various sources including the Chief Minister was a short circuit in the power line.

The fire which started at about 6:20 PM could only be totally controlled by 9:10 PM.

According to Abu Metha, the CM's press secretary, Mrs. Rio was present in the house when the fire broke out. "She is safe" he said.

Mr. Rio, after attending to his official works in the nearby office was entering his residence, when he noticed there was no electricity. He summoned his office staff to ascertain the cause of the power failure. After the electricians arrived, they discovered that the roof of the building was on fire and was quickly spreading.

Fire brigades, about nine in all tried to douse the flames. Emergency services could not reach the spot on time as curious onlookers and well wishers also tried to reach the spot.

Many Ministers, MLAs, bureaucrats and Police officials were also spotted trying to do whatever they could to help. The public also joined in to help.

"It was a wooden structure…almost everything has been destroyed" said Nagaland Addl. Chief Secretary Alemtemshi Jamir.

The official residence was built in 1963 after Nagaland attained statehood. Mr. Rio was the eight Chief Minister to reside in the bungalow.
