Nithari killings: Supreme Court upholds Surinder Koli\'s death sentence

February 15, 2011 New Delhi:

The Supreme Court has confirmed death penalty awarded to Surinder Singh Koli in a Nithari killing case.

Koli, the key accused in the Nithari killings, was given the death penalty for the murder of Rimpa Haldar, by the Allahabad High Court in 2009.

Confirming the sentence, the Supreme Court described the killings by Koli as \'horrifying and barbaric\'.

14-year-old Haldar was one of the 18 young women and children whose body parts were found in a drain behind the bungalow of Koli\'s employer Moninder Singh Pandher in Noida\'s Nithari village, in December 2006.

The Court, however, has kept the CBI appeal against the acquittal of businessman Moninder Singh Pandher pending saying the outcome may affect the other pending cases against him.

In February 2009, a special CBI court sentenced Pandher and Koli to death for raping and killing Rimpa Haldar. But Pandher was acquitted in this case by the Allahabad High court in September 2009.
