Govt may announce JPC probe into 2G scam on Feb 22

New Delhi, February 17, 2011

The UPA government is most likely to announce a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the 2G spectrum scam in Parliament on February 22, sources told Headlines Today.

The government has decided to give in to the BJP-led Opposition\'s demand for a JPC probe in order to ensure a smooth conduct of Parliament during the Budget Session.

The clearest indication of this was made during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh\'s media interaction on Wednesday. Singh told editors that he was not scared of appearing before any panel, including a JPC.

Soon after the PM\'s speech, the government made a fresh bid to end the deadlock with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee meeting top BJP leaders.

The BJP asked the government to decide on its demand for a JPC probe by February 22. \"We have requested that announcement for formation of a JPC should be made on February 22 itself so that Parliament may resume functioning,\" Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said after a meeting with Finance Minister Mukherjee on Wednesday.

Relentless pressure from the Opposition had derailed the Winter Session of Parliament, with no business being conducted. There were fears that the stalemate might extend to the crucial Budget Session that begins from February 21.
