COLLECTIVE EFFORTS CAN BOOST HORTICULTURE INTHE REGION

LUDHIANA, JULY 22:-----

Horticulture has a great scope in agricultural diversification. The State Agricultural Universities, Departments of Horticulture, and other related organizations of Punjab and Haryana are making efforts for the promotion of horticulture in the region. This was stated by Chaudhary Jagbir Singh Malik, former Haryana Minister of Horticulture and now M.L.A. from Gohana during his visit to Punjab Agricultural University. He was accompanied by Mr.Rameshwar Dayal, M.L.A. from Bawal in Haryana. Mr. Malik said that for the fast economic growth horticulture needs a promotion. He added that the concerns and constraints in agriculture, including horticulture were similar in Punjab and Haryana and that collective efforts can help attain success. He shared that as a Horticulture Development Minister in 1996-97, he proposed the establishment of international vegetable market at Rayee. In view of huge loss of perishable horticultural produce of fruits, vegetables and flowers due to inadequate facilities of their postharvest handling and processing, Mr. Malik said that needed steps should be taken to manage the produce.

Mr. Malik and Mr. Dayal visited the standing crops in the field area of the campus. They interacted with the students and said that they should learn new knowledge and technologies as they would contribute toward agricultural development in the country. Mr. Malik said that we must develop nationalistic and patriotic fervor among youth. Dr. G.S.Buter, Head, Department of Agronomy discussed with them about the production technologies of different crops that he said had a focus on resource conservation and natural resource management.

The M.L.As visited the Centre for Communication and International Linkages and discussed about the PAU publications with Dr. Jagtar Singh Dhiman, Additional Director of Communication. They said that PAU has a better outreach to farmers and expressed that they would like to visit it again especially during the Kisan Melas.
