STATISTICAL TOOLS, TECHNIQUES AND SOFTWARES PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN SCIENTIFIC INTERPRETATION OF RESEARCH DATA: DR PARSAD

LUDHIANA, JULY 16:

A six-day training programme on statistical software 'SAS' organized by the PAU Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics (DMSP), in association with National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, culminated here today. The programme was organised under the aegis of National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) "Strengthening statistical computing for National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS)", Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute (IASRI), New Delhi.

Speaking on this occasion, the chief guest Dr Rajender Parsad, Consortium Principal Investigator (CPI) and Head Division of Design of Experiment, IASRI, highlighted the importance of statistical software 'SAS' for analysis of agricultural research data. He said that the widespread use of computers and high end statistical software packages will improve the ability of researchers to interpret voluminous data. Dr Parsad distributed the certificates to the 30 participating scientists from various departments of PAU, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) and Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET). He added that the software is not a replacement of statistical science as a subject but is only a supplement to it. There are over 26,000 scientists under the national agricultural research system (NARS) of which 1500 will be trained in the use of SAS, said Dr Prasad and added that 900 have already been trained.

Addressing the scientists, Dr Ravinder Malhotra, Consortium Co-Principal Investigator (CCPI) and Principal Investigator from NDRI, Karnal, shared his experiences of the training course. He said that training imparted to the trainees will make them globally competitive in agricultural research data analysis. Dr Malhothra told that the software is available to Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes and the State Agricultural Universities (SAUs).

The Dean of the College of Basic Sciences & Humanities, Dr R.S. Sidhu, stressed that such trainings are necessary for the growth of an individual/ discipline and the institution. Sating that the hands-on experience gained from the course will benefit the researchers, Dr Sidhu emphasized that the application of statistical tools in agricultural sciences is important.

The Additional Director of Communication, Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman spoke on how the statistical analysis of data helps in its proper interpretation and drawing correct inference. He said that the SAS will help the researchers in proper data treatment and interpretation. Dr M.L. Bansal, Head DMSP, proposing the vote of thanks, appreciated the efforts of the resource persons from NDRI Karnal for hosting training at PAU and equipping the trainees with the complete understanding of SAS software.

Dr (Mrs) Amrit Kaur Mahal , Nodal Officer of SAS training at PAU, said knowledge gathered from this training will enable the participants to conduct their research more effectively and draw valid conclusions by using appropriate and modern statistical methodologies.
