UK DELEGATION VISITS PAU TO EXPLORE ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH COLLABORATION

LUDHIANA, JULY 21:-----



To forge new relationships and identify international partners for development in agricultural research and academics, a two-member delegation from Writtle College, partner of the University of Essex, United Kingdom (UK), visited Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), today. The delegation members comprised of Mr. Hamid Gharda, Senior International Officer, Chelmsford, Essex and Ms Aparna Mitra from Intra Overseas Education, India Office, New Delhi. They held a meeting with PAU Vice Chancellor Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon and Registrar, Deans, Directors, Coordinator of Research of the university.



Speaking on this occasion, Dr Dhillon said that for facilitating research and academic co-operation between PAU and Writtle College, there is a possibility of collaboration in terms of student exchange with focus on undergraduate (UG) programmes. Apprising the delegation of PAU teaching, research and technology transfer programmes, Dr Dhillon said that facilitation process could be taken forward through signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) and laid emphasis on farm publications, scholarships to and employment of the students and linkages with the industry. He said that new linkages in areas of cooperation would benefit researchers, academicians and the students. Telling that farmers repose full faith in techniques, technologies and expertise of PAU experts, he highlighted the pivotal role played by PAU in ushering in the green revolution and making country self-sufficient on food front. The officials of the university familiarized the delegates with PAU international collaborations covering UG, postgraduate (PG) and Ph.D programmes in the identified areas of agriculture, engineering, basic sciences and home science.



Delivering a power point presentation, Mr Hamid said that aiming at developing partnership with PAU in educational and research programmes in conjunction with the staff of the both the institutes, would lead to regular cohorts of students, joining UG and PG courses at various levels. Appreciating the contribution of PAU to nation's kitty of foodgrains and seeking to formalize links with it, Mr Hamid highlighted the significance of global economy and industrialization and added there is need to focus on research for productive agriculture. Discussing the research areas of Writtle College, he referred to post- harvest technology, crop science and centre for econics and ecosystem. Apart from looking at the fundamental aspects of food security in poorer or developing regions, the delegation underlined the need for laying thrust on farm-scale production of bio-diesel, assessing the resistance of plant species to pathological diseases, strategic planning and performance management for farmers and agri-food supply chain relationship trust building. Highlighting that the College has been supporting careers on business and "green industries," the visiting delegation also acquainted the PAU officers with its academic courses and its joint ventures with the institutes and government bodies across the globe. The visitors were presented with dockets of information about PAU.
