Sandal hurled at Kalmadi

NEW DELHI, April 27, 2011

A youth on Tuesday hurled a sandal at the former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman, Suresh Kalmadi, at the Patiala House Courts complex here.

The sandal missed Mr. Kalmadi, and the police immediately subdued the attacker. He was identified as Kapil Thakur, a lawyer from Gwalior. He was barred from practising law some time ago after he allegedly stabbed a sub-divisional magistrate claiming that he was corrupt. Thakur was booked under the Delhi Police Act, but released later.

The incident happened despite tight security. Despite the episode, Mr. Kalmadi put up a brave face and even smiled as a few dozen supporters from Pune and a retinue of lawyers followed him into the courtroom.

Meanwhile, a separate enclosure has been set up for TV crews and press photographers at the court complex to ensure that Mr. Kalmadi could be taken in and out of the courtroom without too much jostling.
