GADVASU Celebrates Foundation Day

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, Punjab celebrated its 6th foundation day today on 21st April 2011. It is pondered over here that this university was established on 21 April 2006 from the then existed veterinary college of Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana with the aim to boost up further the leaping livestock sector in the State. Sh GS Sandhu, IAS, Financial Commissioner, Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries Department was the cheif guest on this occasion. Dr AK Srivastava, Director Cum Vice Chancellor, National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal was the guest of honour and Dr VK Taneja Vice Chancellor GADVASU presided over the function. Dr PD Juyal, Registrar GADVASU formally welcomed all the dignitaries. Dr SNS Randhawa , Director Reaserch, GADVASU highlighted the research achievement of GADVASUand give elaborative information on the various project that has sanctioned and those which are submitted. While appreciating the commendable work that GADVASU had done in last five years Sh Sandhu said the livestock sector especially dairy and fisheries are coming up very fast but further focus should be given to feed and health management. He further stressed on strengthening the extension wing so that the latest recommendations of varsity should be reached to the farmers. Sh sandhu appreciated the GADVASU extension services for transferring the technology by various mean, especially for publishing the monthly Punjabi magazine "Vigyanak Pashu Palan" and other publication in local languages . Sh sandhu said that he will try to get its subscribed for all villages of Punjab and other community centre so that all farmer can get benefit from it. Before this sh sandhu also inaugurated the Farmer Advisory Centre of the University to guide the livestock farmers and for answering their queries. Dr VK Taneja patted the whole faculty for their excellent performance during all these five years which is depicted through their achievements and appreciation GADVASU is getting ,further he explaining the financial status of the university, motivate the faculty to work hard and bring more projects , name and fame. He explains how the university extension has brought the change in livestock enterprise in the Animal Welfare Centre, Gureh. He revealed that by the various inputs given by the university at the centre the milk productivity, adoption of scientific management practices, fodder production, health status of the animal was creditably improved. Now taking it as Model Village University will replicate this techniques in other village.Dr AK Srivastava greeted GADVASU for successful completion of five years, Dr Srivastava highlighted the role of livestock sector in Nation Economy. He said though globally India ranked first in milk production but the productivity per animal is far below than the developed country. Further he said now after 100 year of cross breeding programme in India, it is the time to reveal the positive and negative of this programme and advised the judicial use of cross breeding programme. He emphasized on preservation of high yielder indigenous breed like Sahiwal, Tharparkar and Gir, culling of unproductive animals, developing the designer food, Nutraceuticals, Probiotics, Fortification of milk, Strengthening of marketing channels, Public Private Partnership and cooperative system. Dr Srivastava revealed that fermented dairy products have series of therapeutic activities especially for GIT problems. He said that for having nutrition security in future a sustainable growth in livestock and fisheries is a prerequisite. Lastly he said that the dream of nation should be to keep the nation secured in term of nutrition, to achieve this we have to work hard. Dr MS Oberoi, Regional Head, FAO, Nepal and ex Dean of Veterinary College congratulated the entire faculty. Dr Oberoi is working on transboundary animal disease especially Avian Influenza. He said that India is growing very fastly and global community is looking toward India for animal health, production and disease Controlling measures. On this occasion a book" Reproductive Management of Dairy Animals" and "Reproductive Calendar for Dairy Animals" by Drs HK Verma, RK Sharma and RK Kasrija were also released.

Dr Simart Sagar Singh, Dean College of Veterinary Science proposed the vote of thanks. He appreciated the role of Dr Oberoi the then Dean of Veterinary College in the establishment of the GADVASU. Sh Inderjit Singh, Director Dairy Development Department, Punjab,Dr Patil, Director, CIPHET and member of boards graced this occasion with their presence. On this occasion the ex Deans of Veterinary College Dr RP sehgal, Dr KS Rai, Dr J S Dhillon,Dr KB Singh and other retired eminent veterinarians were also present. On this day a free vaccination and deworming camp was also inaugurated in the small animal hospital of the university. It is worth mentioning here that this camp will continue upto 28 april of this month. An exhibition by all the Colleges, Regional Centres and Departments were also organized on this occasion to highlight the salient achievements during all these five years.
