Maharashtra farmers visit CIPHET

Ludhiana, April 27:



A delegation of farmers today visited Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) to explore possibilities of setting up food processing industry in the Jalgaon district, a Banana growing belt of Maharashtra.





They were especially interested in banana jam, the technology of which is being advocated by the CIPHET Director Dr R.T Patil.



G.K Patil, who is an advocate by profession, said that he grows banana and papaya in his 180 acres of Land. "My son has recently completed his LLB. But he is more interested in food processing than in legal profession," he said, adding that this brought them to CIPHET.

"We are especially interested in banana jam, powdering technology of onion and garlic and green chilli powder technology," he added. Govind Ramesh Patil said that he was planning to set up some processing unit in his place. "Our district Jalgaon supplies bananas to whole of the country, but there is no processing technology available so far."





Dr Nilesh Gaikwad, CIPHET Scientist, said that there was lot of potential of food processing industry in Jalgaon. "If few farmers take initiative other will start replicating their success models," he hoped. Director CIPHET Dr R.T Patil and Head ToT Dr Deepak Raj Rai said that their institute had developed number of technologies in food processing industry. "Farmers/entrepreneur can contact us for getting training and technology licensing," they added.
