A Brief note on historic strides of Hawks Club

Rupnagar,23 April 2011.



Hawks Club Rupnagar is a club organised by Hockey players for the sole purpose of promotion of Hockey among the youth of this area by providing them coaching facilities, sports material, opportunities of competition by participating in Inter-District, Inter- State & National Hockey events. As a matter of Policy it has been exclusive for men.

Our theme is "Sportsmen's Venture For The Promotion of Hockey".

Rupnagar (previously known as Ropar) is a historical city, hallowed by the memories of Sikh Gurus. Earlier a Sub-Division of Ambala Distt. In the undivided Punjab, its status was raised to a Distt. Headquarter in 1966. The hockey lovers of this area organised themselves as "Hawks Club". Main organiser was Mr. S.S.Saini Advocate, himself a national player who was joined by Manohar Lal Chopra, Headmaster also a hockey player, Late Gurdev Singh Sathi, a State level player and a host of young players. As at present Mr. S.S.Saini is the mainstay of the Club, more especially after he left his legal practice to become a whole time "Crusader" for the promotion & development of hockey.

More and more young hockey enthusiasts joined the club and the club virtually became a "Hockey Movement".

Mr. K.S.Bains IAS the First Deputy Commissioner of Ropar (Rupnagar) had been a great lover of sports. He inspired the young pack and there after all successive Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police of the Distt. extended their patronage. Stalwarts Deputy Commissioners S. Bhagat Singh IAS, J R Kundal IAS, Senior Superintendents of Police Chander Shekhar IPS, Sh. M.S.Bhullar IPS were real source of inspiration.

With Deputy Commissioner as ex-officio Chairman, & Senior Superintendent of Police as ex-officio President of Organising Committee of Dashmesh Hawks All India Hockey Festival & Mr. S.S.Saini as General Secretary the Club got focused on the National Horizon in 1972 & successively 24 All India Festivals were organised with National players, international players having participated (Roll of honour attached).

After a gap of Fifteen years the Silver Jubilee Festival became a reality with young blood added to the Organising Committee, the situation improved with the joining of Mr. Bhupinder Singh Rai, PCS, a senior officer of the Transport Deptt., as Vice –President of the organising committee & Mr. Jasbir Singh Rai , (presently DSP Banga) and a national level hockey player, as Secretary and of course the encougement of S.Jatinder Singh Aulakh, Senior Superintendent of Police, the 25th Festival could be organised very successfully now. Top Hockey Teams of the Country participated in the Festival namely Border Security Force Jalandhar, All India Air Force Delhi, E.M.E. Jalandhar, Sports Hostel Lucknow, Punjab Police Jalandhar, Central Industrial Security Force Delhi, P.S.E.B. Patiala, RCF Kapurthala, Rock Rovers Chandigarh, Sports Authority of India, Bhopal, Baba Farid Club, Faridkot. BSF Jalandhar was declared winner & Punjab Police Jalandhar was runners up.

The total expenditure is likely to exceed ten lacks after all the bills are settled and computed to be audited by a Charted Accountant. The previous 24 Festival accounts were got audited from Charted Accountant as a matter of policy.

Guests on Silver Jubilee

A glaxy of dignitaries of high Status & Rank joined the Silver Jubilee Celebrations as Chief Guests or Guests of Honour. Political leaders include Hon'ble Ch. Swarna Ram, Cabinet Minister, Pb. Govt. on the opening day. (He announced a grant of Rupees Five Lacs), Ch. Nand Lal, Chief Parliamentary Secretary (grant announced One Lac), Mr. Avinash Rai Khanna, Member Parliament (grant Two Lacs), Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema, Advisor CM, Punjab.(He announced to get liberal help from the Hon'ble S. Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister Punjab and & Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister, S. Sukhbir Singh Badal). Sant Ajit Singh MLA announced 50,000. A grant of Rs. 3 lacs was announced by Deputy Commissioner Ropar on behalf of Hon'ble S.Janmeja Singh Sekhon, Irrigation Minister Punjab.

Our Organising Committee Chaiman Sh. G.K.Singh IAS Deputy Commissioner attended the final function while S. Jatinder Singh Aulakh S.S.P Rupnagar & President of the organising Committee was leading the Hawks team on the in-augural & Final functions. Their presence enthused & inspired the Hawks & was cheered by the public.

The guest of honour included Mr. M.F Farooqui IPS, DIG, Ropar Range, Dr. Narinder Bhargav S.S.P Shihid Bhagat Singh Nagar, Padam Shri S.S.Sodhi, IPS DIG PAP, Mr. Iqbal Singh Sahota IPS, Inspector General of Police, Olympian Padam Shri Pargat Singh, Director Sports Punjab.

Besides local leaders of all political parties, reputed singers Mr. Ladi, Mangi Mehal, Nirmal Sidhu, Lakhwinder Lucky, Commedians Bhotu Shah & Ravinder "Ghora" entertained the public and players.

Band Parties from PAP Jalandhar, Phillaur Academy, Commando Batalian Bahadurgarh & Sudhar Pipe Band also joined the celebrations. Bhangra teams performance added another feather to this event. Special guest artists from Tamilnadu exhibited extraordinary show of traditional skills which were appreciated by the public. The Festival was live telecasted on Fastway Network and other reputed channels.

Our Patrons S.Ranjit Singh Rana, S. Bhagel Singh, S. Bhag Singh Desumajra, S. Amarjeet Singh Saini, S. Jarnail Singh Bajwa, Sh.Parveen Kumar & Sh. R.K.Bhalla also graced the Festival.

Sh. G.S.Bains President All India Liberls Hockey Nabha & all other office bearers, Sh. Iqbal Singh Sandhu PCS & Surinder Singh Surjit Hockey Jalandhar, Jarkhar Sports & Rock Rover Chandigarh also joined.
