Jaya sticks with Amar, declines Mulayam offer

LUCKNOW/NEW DELHI: Amar Singh may be in political wilderness but his emotional pull with the Bachchans does not seem to have waned. Jaya Bachchan on Friday turned down the much-coveted RS berth offered to her by Mulayam Singh Yadav in a scantily disguised move to isolate Amar by driving a wedge between him and Bollywood\'s leading clan.

Jaya\'s decision, taken after Amar\'s visit to the Bachchans on Thursday, spared the expelled SP leader what could have been a huge embarrassment, and marked a rebuff to Mulayam. After Mulayam unleashed his shocker on Wednesday, the expelled SP leader seemed to bank on his friendship with Amitabh Bachchan to escape the loss of face. Jaya\'s decision shows that his confidence was not misplaced.

A red-faced SP boss tried to explain away the embarrassment by saying that Jaya turned down the option because of family commitments and that she was fully with the SP. \"Unhone kaha hai ki pariwarik karano se woh abhi rajneeti mein sakriya bhoomika nahin nibha payengi (She has said she will not be able to play an active role in politics owing to family reasons),\" Mulayam said.

The setback for Samajwadi leadership also confirmed that Mulayam and his advisors, in their eagerness to

isolate and humiliate Amar, had not bothered to even sound Jaya out when they announced her nomination. Clearly, they thought that given the scramble for a berth in the upper House, Jaya, an intensely political person, would find the offer irresistible.

They, however, miscalculated Amar\'s continued clout with the Bachchans.

A \"yes\" from Jaya would have dealt a devastating blow to Amar at a time when he is struggling to remain politically relevant.

Interestingly, Amar had appeared resigned to Jaya availing of Mulayam\'s calculated generosity. Unlike Jaya Prada, another Bollywood figure who owes her seat in Parliament to the Thakur from Azamgarh, Jaya seemed reluctant to break away from Samajwadi Party. Though she did turn out for some of the rallies organized by Amar after his expulsion from SP, her comments at an Azamgarh rally, calling Mulayam a \"father-like figure\" only seemed to confirm the fears of Amar\'s associates that she had begun to drift away.

SP also came to the same conclusion, with Mulayam differentiating Jaya B from Jaya P, and praising the former from public platform. That was also the reason why SP gave her the ticket.
