Over 150 crack IIT-JEE , big boost for city

PUNE: The city's performance in the Indian Institutes of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE ) has 'reasonably' improved over last year's .

According to data from various tutorials which coach students for the examination across the city, over 150 students have cleared the exam and figure in the all-India ranking (AIR) merit list. The results were announced by IIT, Madras on Wednesday.

This year, the city saw a rise in the number of students enrolling for the examination. Over 3,500 students took admission in 2010 as compared to approximately 2,500 students , last year.

The city's best showing was by Omkar Thakoor, who secured the eleventh rank in the AIR list. He also emerged as the state topper. Omkar is one of the 50 candidates from Bakliwal Tutorials (BT) who have made it to the AIR. Three of their students made it to the top 200 list, seven in the first 1,000 and 40 secured rankings beyond 1,000.

Director Vaibhav Bakliwal analysed the city's performance and said, "There has been reasonable improvement over last year. Although it is difficult to compare as IIT had also announced an extended merit list (EML) for admissions into the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER). However, this time, they haven't announced the EML, so the number is less when compared to last year."

M Prakash Academy had 34 of its students clearing the examination. Aditya Bhandari was 102 in the AIR list even as 17 students made it to the top 200 list.

Head M Prakash said, "Many years ago, not many students attempted this test so the success rate was low. Now, awareness about the test has increased and each year we see a rise in the number of enrolments from the city. So, if the ratio of the success rate to the total enrolments is considered , there has not been much change."

"A few years ago there were just one or two trainers for the exam. Now, Pune has over a dozen IIT tutorials and professional trainers, which has had a huge impact on the rise in number of students appearing for the test," he added.

From the IITians Prashikshan Kendra, 30 students cleared the test. "Pune students have maintained the overall results this year as in 2009 and there is no sharp increase or decrease this year," said director Durgesh Mangeshkar.

Thirty-two students from Prime Academy got selected of whom two are girls. Their best performance was by Sumit Kshirsagar who was ranked 103 in the AIR list.

The DG Foundation had 12 students clearing the test and their best performance was by Abhishek Gune who stood 375 in the AIR list. Director Arun Dhawan said, "The city is improving its performance. The numbers are rising each year with more students getting into the merit list."

The JEE is widely regarded as the toughest among entrance tests for technology courses. It was conducted by the IIT, Madras this year. Those clearing the exam enter one of the 16 IITs and the Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad.
