Aircraft collision averted

MUMBAI: A possible accident involving two aircraft was averted at the airport here on Thursday.

A spokesperson of Mumbai International Airport Limited said: "Around 9.04 p.m. a Jet Airways flight 9W 616, while on approach to landing, was asked to go around. This was to allow an Indigo flight 6E 415 to cross the main runway at the runway intersection point. The Indigo aircraft entered the runway instead of turning into the taxiway N as per the designated taxi instruction from the Air Traffic Control."

M. G. Junghare, General Manager, Air Traffic Management, told The Hindu that the main runway and the taxiway were indicated by two kinds of lights. The pilot could have entered the runway "on assumption" if the lights of the taxiway were off.

He said it was a "human error."
