BJP meet on \'good governance\' next week

NEW DELHI: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi will give the keynote address at a BJP stock-taking meeting to be held near Mumbai next week.

\"Named `Suraj-Sankalp\' (commitment to good governance), the conference will focus on review of some very noteworthy and innovative welfare or development initiatives (taken in the BJP-ruled states),\" former Goa CM Manohar Parrikar said here on Monday.

Asked why Modi was chosen for delivering the keynote address, Parrikar said the decision was taken keeping his \"good\" track-record of governance in mind as well as the fact that he is the \"senior most\" BJP chief minister.

Parikkar has been made in-charge of the conclave which will be inaugurated by BJP chief Nitin Gadkari.

\"This is a conference and not a workshop. The good deeds of everyone will be discussed there... Slips will be discussed too but weaknesses will not be made public,\" Parikkar said, when asked how the convention was planned.

A report card on good governance of the BJP chief ministers and accountability in their states will be prepared at the convention.

Parrikar argued that if performance in any aspect was bad, it did not mean the party should not aspire for good governance. BJP is in power in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka. The party is a junior partner in Bihar and Punjab.

\"Issues like meeting the millennium development goals in education, employment, health, agriculture, rural development, panchayats and urban infrastructure will also be discussed,\" Parrikar said.

Other issues to be discussed include implementation of the party manifesto, coordination between party organisation and government as well as keeping alive the link with party\'s support base.

Senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha will present a `charter on good governance\'. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj will speak on relationship between the ruling party and the opposition while her counterpart in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley will dwell on administration and management issues.

BJP Parliamentary Party chairman L K Advani will deliver the valedictory address.
