BJP may renominate Venkaiah, Rudy to RS

NEW DELHI: As BJP finalises its list of nominees for Rajya Sabha with several vacancies coming up next month, there is a strong possibility of leaders like M Venkaiah Naidu, Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Anil Dave being renominated to the upper House.

The BJP has begun initial discussions on Rajya Sabha seats and is looking at the possibility of accommodating seniors while also managing the demands of its state units to strike the right factional and caste balance.

While Dave has the backing of Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Naidu has been in the \"senior\" category for some years now. A former party president, he has a good equation with colleagues and is close to BJP veteran L K Advani. Rudy is comparatively junior, but is seen to have completed only a truncated term in Rajya Sabha.

Other likely candidates being mentioned include former UP Speaker Kesri Nath Tripathi, ex-Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra, ex-MP Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and columnist and BJP national executive member Tarun Vijay. These candidatures are under discussion and a decision may be taken with regard to them over the next week or so. Former Uttarakhand CM B C Khanduri has also been mentioned.

BJP can return two MPs from Rajasthan, though it is a bit short, and the state unit is keen to accommodate \"insiders\". The state has often seen one ticket go to a businessman and Rajasthan leaders like state chief Arun Chaturvedi and former CM Vasundhara Raje have held discussions. Chhattisgarh unit is believed to be keen on nominating tribal leader Nand Kumar Sai. The party will return one MP from Maharashtra.

Of the two seats from Karnataka, Naidu can be expected to be accommodated on one while candidatures of local leaders including former minister Dhananjay Kumar — the latter opposed by senior leader Ananth Kumar — are being discussed.
