Punjab leads the field on day two

Punjab led the medals tally on the second and penultimate day of the 10th National Federation Cup junior athletics championships at the Port stadium here on Friday.



Punjab, with four golds, was followed by Maharashtra and U.P. with three golds each. Maharashtra was ahead in the boys\' section with three gold, while West Bengal was leading the pack with two gold, two silver and four bronze in the girls\' category.



No record fell on Friday though S. Thingalaya of Maharashtra came within a whisker of rewriting the record in the 110m hurdles. He finished in 14.39 seconds, 0.02 more than the mark set by Kerala\'s D. Venugopal in 2008.



Gayathry cruises home

G. Gayathry of Tamil Nadu won the 100m hurdles gold. The girls\' high jump saw Sunita win the gold after a tie with Shipu Mondal (WB). Both cleared 1.53m. Karnataka won the girls\' shorter relay comfortably with Nirupama Sundar anchoring the last leg.

10-km walk: 1. Maniram Patel (MP, 45:38.39), 2. Ramkumar Yadav (MP), Sunil Haral (Mah). High jump: 1. Rupendra Singh (Mah, 2.02m), 2. Dharmendra Kumar (Jhar), 3. Arun S. Kumar (Ker). Hammer throw: 1. H. Dagar (U.P., 68.03m), 2. Amit Gill (Har), 3. Ajaj Ahmed (U.P.).



Shot put: 1. Gurwant Singh (Pun, 16.75 M), 2. Kuldeep Singh (Har), 3. Vijay Singh (Del).



4x100m relay: 1. Tamil Nadu (42.73s), 2. Kerala, 3. Punjab. Decathlon: 1. Omveer Singh (Mah, 6,277 points), 2. Akhil (Ker), 3. Akhil S.K. (Ker).



Girls: 100m hurdles: 1. G. Gayathry (TN, 14.18), 2. J. Hemashree (TN), 3. Sumandeep Kaur (Pun). High jump: 1. Sunita (Har, 1.53m), 2. Shipu Mondal (West Bengal).



Long jump: 1. Renu Bala (Orissa, 6.09m), 2. Shraddha (Mah), 3. Tanjila (WB). Pole vault: 1. Anoosha K.K. (Ker, 3.10m), 2. Juby Paily (Ker), 3. S.M.K. Sinju Prakash (Ker). Javelin: 1.
