UP farmers arrive in capital to protest land acquisition policy

New Delhi: Thousands of farmers from Uttar Pradesh on Thursday arrived in the national capital to participate in a demonstration against the state government for its alleged unfair land acquisition policy.

The farmers started reaching New Delhi in hordes from distant corners of Uttar Pradesh in response to a call for demonstration called by Rashritya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh and other peasant leaders.

The agitating farmers have blocked all roads leading to the Parliament and they intend to gherao the Parliament later on Thursday.

They are demanding more monetary compensation against the land acquired from them for the Yamuna Expressway, a dream project of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati.

The farmers are also protesting the death of three farmers in police firing in Aligarh earlier this month.

The Congress, which is in Opposition in Uttar Pradesh, has also lent its support to the cause of the farmers.

However, the party, which is in power in the Centre, has urged the farmers to stage their demonstration in front of the state Assembly, rather than near the Parliament.

Meanwhile, additional security forces have been deployed in the city to avoid any law and order problem.

Traffic regulations are also in place as heavy snarl ups were reported from several parts of the city.

Traffic police officials have asked Delhiites to avoid the stretch between Ramlila Maidan, Rajghat, Barakhamba Road, Ranjit Singh Marg, Tolstoy Marg, Connaught Place, Mandi House, Daryaganj and Chandni Chowk.
