Strike by PCMS doctors: Ludhiana stays away

Ludhiana, Jun 12 2013,

A call given by the PCMS (Punjab Civil Medical Service) Doctors\' Association failed to elicit any response as a majority of doctors were seen on duties in the city on Monday. Ludhiana Civil Hospital witnessed normal functioning as before.

A total of 523 doctors had been transferred by the health department and in protest against these mass transfers, a call for strike had been given by the association as they termed the transfers against the transfer policy. Though the government claimed to have reverted 62 transfers, Dr Hardeep Singh, president of the association, said, \"Not more than 10 had been reverted, the rest were the new transfers as per the request of the doctors.\"

The doctors had announced that they would not perform any medico-legal work, post-mortem and had even decided to shun OPD patients for two days. However, in Ludhiana, no work was affected. Sources said that not many doctors had been transferred from Ludhiana hospital and a few had even got their transfers reverted. Therefore, the doctors were not in a mood to join the call.

Dr Hardeep, however, claimed that except for Ludhiana, the strike was almost 100% successful in all the districts. The doctors\' body had been called by director (health services) Dr Kiranjeet Singh and the health minister for talks on Monday evening. The talks were on till the time of filing this report.

The members demanded suspension orders to be taken back. However, despite the talks, no decision had been taken by the union till late evening.
