ORIENTATION COURSE ON CONDUCTING EFFECTIVE FARM DEMONSTRATIONS HELD AT PAU

LUDHIANA, JUNE 20:



An orientation course on "Planning, Conducting and Implementing Research and Demonstrations" was organized at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Farm Advisory Service Scheme, and Regional Research Stations participated in the course.



In his remarks, the Chief Guest Dr M.S. Gill, Director of Extension Education, observed, "With the advancements in agriculture, it is vital to sensitize the farm scientists to address the shortcomings in the farm demonstrations." He underlined the need for highlighting the impact of the crop varieties and agri-technologies through effective and need-based field demonstrations. There are two types of demonstrations including method demonstration and result demonstration, he informed. Besides, there are disciplinary, inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary types of demonstrations also, he said, while emphasising on identification of farm problem, proper selection of the site, and display of signboards and data about the particular issue, for the successful demonstration.



In his inaugural address, Dr J.S. Dhiman, Additional Director of Research (Natural Resource and Plant Health Management), and Coordinator of the course, said that the extension functionaries have been playing an important role in carrying the farm technologies forward to the grassroot level. To address the future agrarian issues, it is essential to have knowledgeable scientists, he stressed, adding that this orientation course aims at educating the scientists about planning and conducting agri-demonstrations for the benefit of farmers.



During the course, the PAU experts delivered lectures on various aspects of effective field demonstrations. Those present on the occasion included Dr P.S. Aulakh, Additional Director of Research (Horticulture), Dr (Mrs) J.K. Sangha, Additional Director of Research (Food Science, Nutrition and Engineering), Dr J.S. Mahal, Additional Director of Research (Farm Mechanization and Bio-energy), Dr P.S. Chahal, Associate Director of Research and Co-Coordinator of the course, and faculty members of various departments of the PAU.
