‘Supermoon’ to brighten sky on Sunday

New Delhi: 22 Jun 2013

The world will get a rare chance to see the year's largest full moon this weekend, also known as the 'Supermoon'. This 'full moon' is not only the closest and largest of the year, but it also presents Moon's closest encounter with Earth, for all of 2013. The Moon will not be so close again until August, 2014.

Supermoon is the condition when the moon approaches closest towards the earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the Moon's disk as seen from Earth. Astronomers call the Supermoon as 'perigee full moon'. The word perigee describes the moon's closest point to Earth.

During the phenomenon on Sunday, the moon will appear about 12.2 percent larger than its appearance on January 16, 2014, when it will be at its farthest from the Earth. People will have to wait till 7 pm on Sunday to witness it, according to planetary Society of India. The last Supermoon had occurred on March 19, 2011 when its position was 380 kilometers closer to Earth than its usual position.
