Amarnath Shivling melts days before onset of yatra

Srinagar:15 Jun 2013

The holy Shivling at Amarnath cave in Kashmir has started to melt two weeks ahead of the onset of annual pilgrimage. This has been caused by the rise in temperature in the valley.

Amarnath cave is situated at an altitude of 3,880 meter above sea level. Earlier in May this year, the Amarnath Shrine Board had released a few pictures of the Shivling. On the basis of the apparent size of the Shivling in the picture, the board had earlier claimed that its size by the time of the commencement of pilgrimage should be around 14 feet. The yatra is scheduled to begin on June 28.

But on the contrary, the rising mercury level in Kashmir, which is near 34o C at present, has apparently caused premature melting of the holy idol and now it is feared that it would not be able to attain the size predicted by the board.

Speaking on this matter, Amarnath Shrine Board CEO Navin Choudhary said,\"As far as the size of the Shivaling is concerned, nothing concrete can be said about this, on account of religious reasons.\"
