Disproportionate assets case: Jagan appears before CBI

HYDERABAD, May 25, 2012

YSR Congress president Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning on Friday morning in response to the summons issued by the agency in connection with the illegal assets case.

A tight security blanket was thrown by the City police as Mr. Jagan Reddy left his Lotus Pond residence and drove to the Dilkusha Guest House adjacent to the Raj Bhavan for examination by a team of the CBI. He was accompanied by Congress MP Sabbam Hari, ruling party MLA A. K. Srinivas and Central Governing Council Member of YSR Congress Bhuma Nagi Reddy.

Apprehending trouble, police arranged unprecedented security in Hyderabad and the rest of the State by clamping prohibitory orders under Sec. 144. The entire area around Raj Bhavan was closed for traffic from the morning and even flow of pedestrians was regulated.

He was seen off at his residence by his mother, Vijayamma, who is honorary president of YSR Congress, family members and close aides. Dozens of party followers made a vain bid to obstruct the convoy of Mr. Jagan as it left his house.

A big question mark hung on the issue whether Mr. Jagan, number one accused in the assets case, would be arrested by the CBI because three other accused in the case, including Excise Minister Mopidevi Venkataramana Rao have already been arrested. Moreover, the Principal CBI court had rejected his ad interim bail application on Thursday. On the flip side, his arrest today seemed a remote possibility since he is scheduled to appear before the CBI Court on May 28.

Meanwhile, former Rajya Sabha member M. V. Mysura Reddy was suspended from the Telugu Desam Party, minutes after he had a breakfast meeting with Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy, signalling his entry into the YSR Congress.

Dr. Mysura Reddy told reporters that Mr. Jagan was growing politically and elders like should bless him. "We expected an impartial investigation by the CBI but it is succumbing to political pressures. That is why political parties are demanding an autonomous investigating agency. Mr. Mopidevi Venkataramana Rao has been made a scapegoat to justify action against Mr. Jagan", he said.

The ex-Rajya Sabha member has been unhappy with the Telugu Desam after being denied re-nomination to the Upper House. His decision to join the YSR Congress is an irony since he had contested and lost against Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy in the bye-election to the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat last year.
