DISCOURAGE USE OF PLASTIC, SAY PAU HOME SCIENTISTS

LUDHIANA, MAY 25:-----

"Plastic has moulded the modern world and transformed the quality of life. It is used to manufacture thousand of household articles such as boxes, bottles, containers, tumblers, chairs, tables and many more. It is, in some way or the other, a part of electrical equipments, automobile, aircraft parts, kids' toys and everyday articles. However, plastic pollutes air, water and land and causes serious damage to environment during its production and disposal." These views were expressed by the home scientists of the Department of Family Resource Management of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). They said that the major chemicals that go into the making of plastic (ethylene oxide, benzene and xylenes) are highly toxic and pose serious threat to living beings of all species on earth. Plastic wastes clog the drains and thus hit, especially, urban sewage systems. Disclosing that plastic bags take 15 to 1000 years to degrade, they observed that by using/reusable cloth bags, one can save upto six plastic bags a week that translate into 24 bags a month and 288 bags a year.

Pointing out the causes of plastic pollution, Dr Usha Jindal said that urbanization has added to the plastic pollution in concentrated form in cities. Plastic thrown on land can enter into drainage lines and choke them, resulting into floods in local areas in cities. Saying that plastic is used because it is cheap and can be discarded easily, she noted that it does not decompose and requires high energy ultra-violet light to breakdown.

Providing tips to minimize the plastic pollution, Dr Arshwinder Kaur advised the public to avoid accepting plastic bags and instead, carry a jute bag for shopping. To save environment, one should try BYOB means i.e. "bring your own bag" policy, she suggested. Stressing on avoiding disposing of plastic along with organic wastes, she urged the people not to throw waste food in plastic bags or containers. Use glass/ceramic instead of plastic in microwave. Replace plastic travel mugs with stainless steel for hot beverages, she advised. Asking to avoid the use of plastic chairs or tables, Dr Kaur suggested the public to use wood/metal instead.

The scientists emphasized on keeping plastic articles and toys away from the reach of little children. Always supervise kids when they are working with such potential plastic articles, they added. There is no better way to avoid plastic than to buy food that has never seen plastic. Underlining the need to minimize the use of plastic in day-to-day life, the home scientists stressed "say no to plastic" and buy reusable bags.
