COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA Tel: 2428488 Date: 24.05.2012 PRESS RELEASE The Communist Party of India (CPI) and CPI (M) held a protest demonstration and rally in front of Mini Secretariat today against the highest ever rise in prices of Petrol by Rs.7.50 and thereby all essential commodities. They termed it as bolt from the blue for the common man already reeling under difficulties due to exorbitant increase in prices of essential items. Various speakers said that the parties had warned in the beginning that deregulation of prices of oil in the country will give free hand to the companies to raise prices at will and hit the common man hard. They demanded immediate roll back of the increase in prices of petrol. They also demanded at the Punjab government should waive off the tax on petrol which is highest in the country in our state. This rise coupled with highest ever devaluation of rupee has thoroughly exposed the bankruptcy of the economic policies of neo liberalism. The statement by the Finance Minister Prab Mukhrjee that the government has no control on the companies now further exposes the mockery of the government with the people. The speakers said that due to the rise in prices of petrol and diesel every time, the prices of essential eatables and other items increase automatically, which hits the common mans budget. Citing the condition of common man as a result of the price rise they said the common people have cut their kitchen budget and this has affected their quality food intake. They further said that during the UPA 1 government the left parties forced the central government not to raise the prices of petrol and diesel, but during the UPA 2 the central government has got a free hand and has raised the prices of petrol. The left parties had also suggested to create a reserve fund at the level of the government to adjust the increase/decrease the prices of crude oil in the international market, which fell on the deaf ears of the central government. They demanded immediate roll back of the petrol prices and creation of the reserve fund. Those who addressed the rally include Com Kartar Singh Bowani-Distrtict Secretary CPI, Com Sukhminder Singh Sekhon – Distt. Sec. CPI (M al, Com D I Mobile: 9417000360
