Nigerian delegation visits CIPHET to find collaborative areas

Ludhiana, May 23:

"India is a lead partner in agriculture research with western African nations and CIPHET could play a significant role in development of post harvest sector," Dr Orif. Mathew O. Abatan, Acting Director, Department of Life and Earth Science, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, made these remarks during the exploratory visit to Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET), here today. He was accompanied by the Prof Ayo Arowojolu, Head Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Michal Alastise, Deputy Bursar from the university.



Speaking on the occasion, Dr Orif. Mathew said that sustainability of agriculture production was a big challenge in western African nations. "We can learn a lot from the each others experience and find collaborative means to achieve excellence," he said, adding that is quite impressed with research initiatives taken at the CIPHET in the area of post harvest. Director CIPHET Dr U.S Shivhare said that they would be happy to provide help to the Ibadan university and African nations by all feasible means. He informed that CIPHET had done significant research in the post harvest sector and could contribute for development of this sector in the West African region.



Dr Hari Shankar, Joint Director Education, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, PUSA, who was accompanying the delegation, said that India could specifically help in development of laboratories and training faculty in the agriculture institutes of western African countries. "There could be more exchanges of faculties and students in each others' countries," he added.



Saying that Nigeria and India shares lot of similarities in socio-economic conditions, Dr Hari said that cooperation between two sides could bring synergy. On the occasion, a film on research and activities of CIPHET was also screened for the delegates. A brief interaction also took between delegation members and CIPHET faculty to acquaint each other about various research activities. Dr S.K Nanda, Project Coordinator (PHT), Dr Deepak Raj Rai, Head Transfer of Technology Division and Dr S.N Jha, Head Agriculture Structures and Environmental Control (AS&EC) took active part in the discussions among others faculty members.
