Sensex falls 149.33 pts; ICICI Bk, NTPC drop

Indian markets dropped in early trade on Monday erasing earlier gains. The Nifty was trading above 24-month high.



The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a decline of 149.33 points or 0.76% at 19,445.42, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 56.25 points or 0.96%, at 5,828.70.



At 9.03.am, the Sensex was trading down 149.33 points or 0.76% at 19,445.42 with 4 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 15.55 points or 0.26% at 5,900.50 with 42 components gaining.



Sensex Movers



I C I C I Bank contributed fall of 4.46 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Sterlite Industries (India) (2.88 points), NTPC (2.04 points), Hindalco Industries (0.43 points) and Tata Power Company (0.59 points).



However, Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed rise of 12.24 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Infosys Technologies (9.49 points), Larsen & Toubro (7.8 points), I T C (4.8 points) and H D F C Bank (4.78 points).





Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.12%), Reliance Communications (1.05%), Cipla (0.95%), Tata Motors (0.81%), Reliance Energy (0.77%), and Bharti Airtel (0.74%).



On the other hand, Sterlite Industries (India) (0.87%), NTPC (0.46%), I C I C I Bank (0.29%), and Hindalco Industries (0.13%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.



Mid & Small-cap Space



The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.56% and 0.55% respectively.



The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Allcargo Global Logistics (2.55%), Ackruti City (1.69%), Alstom Projects India (0.28%), Allahabad Bank (0.24%) and Core Projects and Technologies (0.08%).



The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aegis Logistics (1.77%), Reliance MediaWorks (1.28%), Provogue (India) (0.85%), Adhunik Metaliks (0.6%) and Ahluwalia Contracts (India) (0.41%).



Sectors in Limelight



The Consumer Durables index was at 6,264.31, up by 110.14 points or by 1.79%. The major gainers were Blue Star (8.13%), Whirlpool Of India (1.02%), Videocon Industries (0.65%), Titan Industries (0.42%) and Gitanjali Gems (0.34%).



The HC index was at 5,888.32, up by 46.08 points or by 0.79%. The major gainers were Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (1.52%), Biocon (0.96%), Cipla (0.95%), Cadila Healthcare (0.34%) and Aurobindo Pharma (0.2%).



The IPO index was at 2,334.33, up by 17.68 points or by 0.76%. The major gainers were Aster Silicates (2.48%), Indiabulls Power (0.88%), Aqua Logistics (0.87%), ARSS Infrastructure Projects (0.52%) and Bajaj Corp (0.3%).



The FMCG index was at 3,585.39, up by 22.29 points or by 0.63%. The major gainers were Nestle India (0.93%), Hindustan Unilever (0.5%), I T C (0.42%), Dabur India (0.27%) and Colgate-Palmolive (India) (0.2%).





Market Breadth



Market breadth was positive with 824 advances against 209 declines.



Value and Volume Toppers



Delta Corp topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 64.84 million. It was followed by Reliance Industries (Rs. 19.43 million), Polyplex Corporation (Rs. 17.44 million) and Tata Motors (Rs. 15.46 million).



The volume chart was led by Delta Corp with trades of over 0.89 million shares. It was followed by Ispat Industries (0.62 million), Ras Resorts & Apart Hotels (0.30 million) and FCS Software Solutions (0.25 million).
